Who We Are

Betty J. Kemper, President of The Kemper Company, has been directly involved in the strategic planning, development, financing, marketing, and management of services and housing for the elderly for over forty years. Since 1994, Ms. Kemper has led her own firm in providing facility development and care management for seniors. Ms. Kemper's breadth of experience includes some of the most innovative initiatives in housing for older adults, project financing, geriatric care, management. In addition, Ms. Kemper is the managing partner of Kemper House, a residential care facility specifically designed for persons with memory impairments such as Alzheimer's disease.

Prior to founding The Kemper Company, Ms. Kemper was President and Chief Executive Office of The Eliza Jennings Group in Cleveland, Ohio. In that capacity, she managed an organization that is a parent holding company for a group of elderly housing and health-related not-for-profit corporations. During her tenure, the organization grew from a local, high quality provider of services to a large, regional corporation providing multi-dimensional services and programs in wellness, health care, and housing for the elderly. Among Ms. Kemper's achievements at The Eliza Jennings Group was her role in developing The Renaissance, the first continuing care retirement community in Northeast Ohio of the time. As Project Director, Ms. Kemper oversaw all aspects of the development, construction, marketing, and financing of the $50.1 million, 289 unit CCRC in Olmsted Township, Ohio.

In addition to her experience with housing and health care for seniors, Ms. Kemper is involved in urban planning and development. She completed an historic renovation of the first chewing gum factory in America, which was an abandoned five story building in Cleveland, Ohio. Chiclets were born here! She is currently developing Chicle Townhomes adjacent to The Chicle Building.

Ms. Kemper continues to be involved in community and state organizations committed to economic development and elderly housing and services. She is a Board member and Multi-Family Chairperson for the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, representing all senior housing in the State of Ohio; and a member of the Business Advisory Board for Ohio Northern University. She is a volunteer with the Alzheimer's Association and is currently Vice President of Pilgrim St. Paul Church in Lakewood, Ohio.

Kristin West, Executive Vice President of The Kemper Company and a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, directs all facility operations for the company's management contracts. In that capacity, she leads multidisciplinary teams in turnkey facility management. Ms. West also leads Kemper's management consulting projects focused on staff education, facility start-up, and turnaround.

Ms. West's experience in long term care spans nearly twenty years. She has successfully licensed, furnished, staffed, managed, and marketed to capacity numerous assisted livings and skilled facilities. Ms. West's practical experience also includes leadership in troubled-facility turnarounds, resulting in restored optimal financial and operational performance, and deficiency-free status with the state regulatory board. She has worked in both for-profit and not-for-profit environments.

When Ms. West joined The Kemper Company in 1994, she collaborated with Betty Kemper to write a special plan of care for people living with Alzheimer's and dementia. The hybrid medical-assisted living model provides for the special needs of those living with memory impairments to live out their lives with dignity in a secure, residential setting. The Kemper House model is widely recognized as an industry standard for supporting the special needs of those living with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. At The Kemper Company, Ms. West continues to oversee all day-to-day operations and strategic planning for the Kemper House facilities located in the Cleveland area.

Ms. West is a Board Member of the National Centers for Assisted Living; Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Centers for Assisted Living; Board Member of the Ohio Health Care Association; Qualified Dementia Care Specialist certified through the Alzheimer's Foundation of America; and serves as a volunteer guardian with Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries' Adult Guardianship Services.
